John Gilmore Family

John Marion Gilmore was born in Iowa on July 28, 1845. Mrs. Gilmore was also born in Iowa, and her birthdate was October 28, 1853. They had ten children, five sons and five daughters.

John came to North Dakota in 1902 with his family, and homesteaded eight miles north and three miles east of what became Granville, in McHenry County. Two daughters also took out homestead claims near their parents. The township was named Gilmore Township.

Many of the residents of the area referred to the Gilmores as Dad and Mother. The Gilmores farmed and had a few cattle until the early 1930s, when they retired and moved into town.

In his earlier years, John Gilmore ran a threshing rig and did the threshing for many of his neighbors.

Mrs. Gilmore passed away in 1935, and Mr. Gilmore died in 1937.
